DaCAS Permanent Document: Target Devices and Databases v0.5 — Summary
Overview
This is a living/permanent document tracking progress of the DaCAS (Data Collection for Audio Capture Solutions) work item under SA4. It defines target UE device types, recording scenarios, and databases to support development and evaluation of immersive audio capture solutions for IVAS encoder input formats.
Target Device Categories
- Category 1 (Prototypes): Device A (idealized accessory, free-field approximation) and Device B (practical smartphone with non-planar mic array) — for algorithm development and theoretical validation
- Category 2 (Commercial smartphones): Mainstream smartphone configurations reflecting market-available devices for legacy deployment scenarios
- Additional devices include 3-mic smartphone, 4-mic smartphone variants (×2), and 3-mic XR HMD
Recording Scenario Framework
Three scenario types defined:
1. Device characterization — electro-acoustic properties (frequency response, etc.)
2. Development recordings — algorithm development for raw/compensated mic signal processing into IVAS encoder input formats
3. Evaluation recordings — subjective and objective evaluation; objective evaluation aligned with TS 26.260
Minimum Mandatory Recordings (per device)
- Required: Recording scenarios 1, 2, 3, [9 and 10]; at least 2 real immersive usage scenario recordings (from scenarios 5–8)
- Recommended: At least 4 immersive usage recordings; all defined scenarios if possible
- Editor's note open: whether scenario 3 recordings can substitute scenarios 9/10
Database Requirements
- Raw microphone signals must be recorded (no pre-processing/NR)
- Minimal acoustic footprint from mounting hardware
- Channel ordering, DUT orientation, turntable direction, and source signals must be documented
- Separate databases provided for each device type (links included for Nokia 4-mic prototype, 3-mic smartphone, 4-mic smartphone ×2, XR HMD — several are simulation-based)
Key Affected Specs / References
- TS 26.533 (DaCAS technical spec, v0.1.0) — device type definitions referenced from §4.2
- TS 26.260 — referenced for objective evaluation alignment
- Three interlinked database templates: Target Device DB, Recording Scenarios DB, Recordings DB
Status
Work in progress; several editor's notes remain open (coordinate system optimization, scenario 9/10 construction from scenario 3 recordings, per-solution device targeting flexibility).
